New Video: The Story of Chinese Exclusion in Canada

"The physical scars that many of these people carried was to me also the history of violence that had been inflicted."

Lily Cho, Associate Dean at York University in Toronto and project lead of Mass Capture, takes a special interest in the relationship between citizenship and official photography (as featured in immigration documents) in Canadian diaspora communities. In this extended scene from The Six, she talks about the experience of Chinese immigrants to Canada in the early twentieth century, and the ways in which documents such as the C.I.9 modeled citizenship for future generations.

Mass Capture is a fascinating exploration of Canada's exclusion and state-surveillance of people of Chinese origin in the 20th century, and the production of non-citizen identity for thousands of men, women and children. Find out more at https://masscapture.ca/ci-9/
